I recently mentioned that I had made a stone guard that I just cable tie to the bull bar. As I am not a member I could not upload any photos. The link I tried apparently failed as I got heaps of requests for more photos. The only one I had did not show it properly.

I just took a few more that are a bit better.

If someone who could upload them was to drop me an email at vk1dx@bigpond.net.au I would really appreciate it if I could send them the photos to upload, link or attach them to this thread.

They are not big files. I have reduced the file size to save on data transfer costs for you.

This is not a commercial venture in anyway whatsoever. I am not going to make them. Just wanted to show those who enquired what I did, to give them a few ideas and maybe save a few headlights and radiators. The only commercial assistance I got was from Ritchie at Hume Offroad in the ACT who welded the frame for me.

Phil

Thanks Kev. I got about 40 emails asking for a few more details and photos. Couldn't believe it but then there isn't much on the marked. Zip I think.

As all will see not a lot to it. But it stopped those rocks. At least two were the size of golf balls.

Apart from the headlights, what does the 'stone protector' protect ??

The radiator for one. The plastic "grill" wouldn't stop much so that's a major bit. You will also see that the leading edge of the bonnet is protected and if you were to mount any lights or even a "top mounted" winch the cover over the winch relays would also be protected.

It was mainly just made to protect the lights and radiator. Both of the factory fitted plastic light protectors were already chipped and cracked and needed a little help.

I will also add that the center grill near the Toyota badge has been snapped before this was fitted.

I know you said it in a previous email, but what is the outer bar made of? And how did you get those nice bends, and how did you attach the bars toward the middle?

Gonna make me one of those...

Don't blame you Viz and if you do as I did attach it with cable ties you can take it off back home.

The frame is made from 3/8th mild steel, bent on the go by hand to match the shape of the bull bar. Ritchie of Hume Offroad helped there. He shaped and welded it with me in tow helping where needed. Only took about 15 minutes. The two center bars were welded in place by Ritchie. With me holding them in place. Not terribly scientific but it worked.

A hint. Put steel everywhere there is a chance of the wire touching your bullbar. That gives you something to put some protecting hose etc on to make sure the wire does not mark the bullbar.Mine is beside the center bits and the wire marks the bullbar. Not that we really mind. This is not a sunday church car.

Best of luck. Beats breaking lights and radiators.

Don't blame you. I just remember how many lights and damaged bonnets we have had over 50 years and not having a car with a bullbar before I never thought about it. Even then we nearly did a trip ACT toWA /NT without it. Made it the day before we left.

Great photos Phil. Thanks for your reply emails too.

Now all you have left to do is connect the dual batteries to the new grille and you got your own travelling bug zapper. Man, I think I can smell them bugs burning from here :))

Thanks again

Phil,
thanks for the email and thanks to Sir Kev for posting the pics. Good stuff both of you. Now, all I have to do is make one.

There is only one concern, in the current legalistic climate, relevant: anyone know how legal it is, if at all in any State?

Remember those windscreen protectors that used to be common on 4WDs, made similarly? Some swung up out of the way. They got zapped by the relevant gumnuts, no longer around.

Wont stop me making one though. I'll talk my way out of it if I get stopped...
